Set achievable goals for that New Year's fitness burst

A NEW Year, a new you?

These words seem to inspire a burst of enthusiasm in residents across the region, with a spike in gym memberships stemming from New Year's resolutions being reported.

Exercise and Sport Science Australia executive officer Anita Hobson-Powell said that in a perfect world everyone would have survived the silly season while keeping up with fitness regimes and minding what we ate.

"It actuality, however, many of us grant ourselves permission to 'fall off the wagon' for a few weeks in December," she said.

Keegan Lankowski, manager of Jetts in Bundaberg, said he always saw gym memberships skyrocket following the New Year, which brought with it new resolutions to get fit.

"It always happens, it's good for business and good for people trying to motivate themselves, but it's disappointing that it's not for the long term," he said.

Mr Lankowski said people often were chasing a "quick fix" for an unhealthy lifestyle.

He suggests setting a goal you can achieve early in the year.

"Make little changes in regard to exercise and nutrition, something achievable."
