'Sensible decisions' should be made during flood recovery

NATIONALS Leader Warren Truss says mistakes of the past must not be repeated when rebuilding infrastructure destroyed in the recent floods.

Speaking on indulgence before Question Time on Tuesday the Member for Wide Bay said governments of all levels had a responsibility to ensure sensible decisions were made during the flood recovery.

"There's been a lot of talk about betterment and the need to build facilities better than they were," said Mr Truss, whose home town of Maryborough was also devastated by the floods.

"I went to Gayndah and the Mayor showed me their water intake facility out of the river which was destroyed in 2011, rebuilt exactly the same as it was and has now been destroyed again.

"If it had been built just a couple of metres higher that issue wouldn't have arisen.

"I think we need to work with the various tiers of government to find ways to make sure that when we learn from one set of experience about infrastructure being lost, we don't allow that to be repeated."

Mr Truss also supported the idea of moving some flood-prone communities to higher ground, like was done in Grantham after the 2011 floods.

"I think that will stand us in better stead to deal with these crises in the future," he said.

Mr Truss followed speeches by Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and Treasurer Wayne Swan, each of whom thanked the volunteers who helped during the many natural disasters this summer.
