Senator Nova Peris officially introduced to parliament

THE first indigenous Australian female Senator was officially sworn in today.

Despite a tough introduction to parliament, Senator Nova Peris officially replaced the Northern Territory's Trish Crossin on the red leather on Wednesday.

The Senator and former Olympian also undertook a traditional indigenous blessing after the Westminster ceremony in Canberra.

Ms Peris is expected to give her maiden speech in the parliament tonight.
