Wolfmother wowed Byron Bay with a surprise gig at The Northern Hotel last night.

AUSSIE rockers Wolfmother played a secret gig in Byron Bay last night.

They had rung The Northern Hotel in Jonson St earlier in the day asking management if they could play there in the evening.

According to the pub's operations manager Hannah Spalding, there was some "umming and ahing" as to whether the gig would go ahead but the band confirmed by about 4pm.

Word got around quickly, too, with 550 people filling the pub's back room to see the lads play.

Many of Wolfmother's members, including frontman Andrew Stockdale, live locally, making it easy for them to roll up and perform the last-minute show.

Roots musician Marshall Okell was scheduled to headline at The Northern last night but ended up supporting Wolfmother.

Ms Spalding said Okell was "stoked" to have chalked up a support with one of Australia's best-known rock outfits.
