Schumacher in coma following skiing accident

RETIRED seven-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher is in a critical condition after falling and hitting his head on a rock while skiing with his son in the French Alps.

The 44-year-old German, whose agent says was wearing a helmet at the time he fell, suffered serious brain trauma and was in a coma on arrival at hospital where he had a brain operation.

Schumacher (pictured) is the most successful Formula One driver of all time with a record 91 race victories.

He won two titles with Benetton, in 1994 and 1995, before switching to Ferrari in 1996 where he won five straight titles from 2000 before retiring in 2006. He made a comeback to the track for Mercedes in 2010 before retiring again in 2012.

Former England cricket captain Michael Vaughan, in Australia for the Ashes, tweeted: "Forget the cricket. Everyone's thoughts should be with Michael Schumacher."
