THE Salvation Army has launched a Flood Appeal to help fund its work supporting communities across Queensland and northern New South Wales.
Salvation Army spokesperson, Major Bruce Harmer said the Salvation Army's initial response is to work closely with emergency services in providing humanitarian support (primarily catering) at evacuation centres.
"The next stage in our service delivery will be to provide ongoing support to individuals and families once the full extent of the devastation becomes apparent, " Major Harmer said.
"The Salvation Army encourages anyone impacted by the disasters or traumatised in any way who requires emotional support to contact Salvo Care Line on 1300 36 36 22.
"We are also calling upon the Australian community to give generously to The Salvation Army's Flood Appeal by donating to our Australian Disaster Relief Fund online at salvos.org.au, by phoning 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) or in person at any Westpac branch or Woolworths and Big W stores across Australia.
Supermarket chain Woolworths has since announced it will match customer donations to the Salvation Army's appeal with a goal to raise $1 million in one week for disaster affected communities.
Managing Director of Woolworths supermarkets, Tjeerd Jegen, said by matching customer's donations Woolworths will double the support provided to communities across flood affected areas.
"The aim is to raise up to $1 million in one week for the Salvation Army through a combination of customer donations and Woolworths matching those donations dollar-for-dollar."
If a customer adds, for example, a $25 donation to their grocery bill anytime in the next week Woolies' will match it leading to a $50 total donation to the Salvos.
Customers can donate to the Salvation Army when shopping at Woolworths, either through any checkout or when ordering online.
