Sailors bid for another medal

THANK God for our sailors.

First it was Tom Slingsby in the laser class, then the golden run at Weymouth continued when Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen, who grew up in the same street in Lake Macquarie, blew their rivals out of the water in the 49er class.

Last night the men's 470 crew of Malcolm Page and Matthew Belcher were in the box seat ahead of their medal race.

And tonight the women get their chance when the semi-finals of the elliott (match-race) class will be contested.

The crew of Olivia Price, Nina Curtis and Lucinda Whitty won all of their 11 qualifying races, then dispatched the Netherlands 3-1 in the best of five quarter-finals series.

The girls come up against Finland in the semi-final (11pm tonight).

The Finns beat the US 3-1 in its quarter-final, but were beaten by the Aussies in their match race on day one of the event and finished with a 6-5 record over the 11 round robin races.

If the Aussies get through the semi-final, they will take on the winner of the Spain versus Russia semi in the gold medal race scheduled for 10.05pm tomorrow.

Rosanna has designs on female taboo

Artist Rosanna Pimm uses 3500 porcelain tampons to created her large scale performance installation Riots of Passage in The Quad as part of The Lismore Women's Festival on International Women's Day. Laying down and de-constructing the mandala structure symbolises the impermanence of the menstrual cycle and an end to female inequality in the world.
