Gutsy safari tour guide gored by buffalo

IT'S believed a 61-year-old man was protecting another when he was gored by a buffalo in remote Arnhem Land on Sunday.

The experienced safari tour guide suffered lacerations and suspected fractures when he was attacked by the buffalo at about 10.30am, 170km northwest of Numbulwar.

It is believed the buffalo charged at another man who had fallen to the ground, when the tour guide put himself between the buffalo and the man.

Local clinic staff picked him up at his remote location and drove for several hours on an unsealed road back to Numbulwar, where the injured man was met by a flight nurse on board a CareFlight aircraft.

The man was flown to Royal Darwin Hospital, where he arrived at around 8pm in a stable condition.

The CareFlight crew praised Numbulwar clinic staff for their efforts in undertaking emergency treatment and bringing the man back to Numbulwar airstrip.
