Time wasting and dangerous tackles not on in 2014 NRL comp

TIME-wasting and dangerous tackles have been targeted by the NRL ahead of the 2014 season.

Head of football Todd Greenberg has announced a series of rule changes, including cutting down the times when a captain can talk to a referee.

Under the "captain's rule", a skipper will only be able to talk to a referee during a stoppage in play, and as players leave the field for the halftime break. Penalties and scrums are not considered to be stoppages.

The clock will also be stopped during the last five minutes of a game following a conversion or penalty shot at goal, until play restarts.

Meanwhile "crusher" tackles will be graded at the higher end of charges by the match review committee, and referees have been instructed to call held earlier when a player is trapped in an upright position to prevent a third defender coming in late and making a "cannonball" tackle.
