Rudd launches Whitlam book

KEVIN Rudd has unveiled the second volume of fellow former prime minister Gough Whitlam's controversial biography at an official launch in Sydney.

Penned by Melbourne University graduate Jenny Hocking, part two of Gough Whitlam: His Time, explores what drove former governor-general Sir John Kerr to sack the twice-elected Whitlam government and appoint Malcolm Fraser as prime minister.

A series of personal interviews reveal how Mr Whitlam struggled to deal with the dismissal and what spurred him to re-enter politics as Australia's ambassador to UNESCO.

The book also pays tribute to Mr Whitlam's long-suffering wife Margaret and the support she provided throughout his career.
