UPDATE 10am: NSW Ambulance Inspector Greg Powell said paramedics were called to the scene just after 5pm after reports of a two car collision.

Insp Powell said when they arrived they found a Subaru driven by a 53-year-old Lennox Head man had crashed into the driver's side of a Holden Astra driven by the 20-year-old woman.

"A 10-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Holden was treated at the scene for arm fractures and suspected leg injuries," he said.

"He was transported to Tweed Heads hospital in a serious but stable condition."

"The 53-year-old man driving the Subaru was treated at the scene for chest and neck injuries before being taken to Lismore Base Hospital in a serious but stable condition."

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
