Root shunted to No.6 as England makes changes

ENGLAND Test opener Joe Root says he has no problem dropping down the order to No.6 in his side's campaign to win the Ashes for a fourth consecutive time.

Root (pictured) started his Test career at six in India last year, but opened in all five Ashes Tests in England, scoring 339 runs at an average of 37.66, including a stunning Test best 180 at Lord's.

But he only reached 30 in three of his 10 innings at the top of the order and now left-hander Michael Carberry is set to open with captain Alastair Cook in Thursday's first Test against Australia at the Gabba.

Carberry has played only one Test, against Bangladesh in 2010, scoring 30 and 34, but he has been in prolific form on tour to date, scoring 78, an unbeaten 153, 4 and 50. Root said he was happy just to play.

"To get to put on the shirt and cap, that's the main thing for me," he said.
