Rocky Creek Dam re-opened

Rocky Creek Dam was re-opened last Friday after nine months of work to upgrade the dam wall.

The dam was completed in 1953 and met safety standards at the time, but the estimate of rainfall and floods has increased dramatically since then. If the wall failed there could have been catastrophic consequences for houses downstream and for the region’s water supply.

Rous Water chairman Col Sullivan said with the engineers works now completed, the dam should be able to withstand any possible flood.

“We have reconstructed the dam in a style that is faithful to the original late 1940s heritage of the dam. We think that many people will not recognise that the significant work has been carried out and that was our intention,” Cr Sullivan said.

Completion of the project has been delayed for several months because of the wet weather, but has come in under budget.
