Rockhampton mayor seeks Labor backing to run

ROCKHAMPTON Mayor Margaret Strelow has just announced she has nominated for preselection for Capricornia.

Mayor Strelow made the announcement via Facebook at 7am today: 

"I have nominated for Labor Preselection for the Federal seat of Capricornia. It will be a difficult preselection and I may or may not be the candidate," Mayor Strelow posted on Facebook.

"There is a long journey yet to go within the Labor Party processes and I would expect a vote among Labor party members will eventually select the candidate.

"This doesn't mean my commitment to my role as your Mayor is in any way reduced.

"I know this region and love it, and I'm convinced that I can put our issues and needs more effectively in Canberra.

"Should I be successful in winning preselection the next Federal election is not expected until after the local government election in 2016."
