Rocky businessman far from alone in new obesity figures

ROCKHAMPTON businessman Dominic Doblo knows how hard it can be for people leading a busy lifestyle to lose weight and keep healthy.

And he's far from alone as new figures show obesity continues to be a growing problem across Queensland.

Interestingly though, while Rockhampton has always been thought to be one of the state's fat hotspots, there are other areas expanding quicker than us.

The Queensland Government yesterday released figures for each local government area from the Self-reported health status 2011-12 study which shows Rockhampton has 25% more people than the state average classified as obese.

The report classified 28.6% (or 24,000 people over 18 years) of Rockhampton's population as obese, compared to the stage average of 22.6%.

Gladstone had 36% more obese people than the state average while the Isaac shire mining region led the way with 39%.

Dominic said while he was "a big bloke", he'd been trying to keep active while staying away from unhealthy foods.

"I try to do cross fit and get on the push bike," Dominic said.

"I'm trying to get a 5km walk started through Kershaw Gardens every weekend from next month as well."

But it's easier said then done in some cases, when it comes to exercise and eating right.

"When you see how busy lifestyles are today, it's easy to see how (weight gain) happens," Dominic said.

"When a husband and wife both work it's tempting to get takeaway each night.
