Retail employees will be the real winners in 2014

SEVERAL hundred retail jobs stand to be created in 2014 with expansion at the Fraser Coast's two major shopping centres.

Stockland Shopping Centre in Hervey Bay has already opened a new car park and is expected to finish building a $115 million extension by July next year.

It will house a new Coles and Kmart department stores, three smaller major stores and an estimated 70 other new retailers.

A second development application has also been lodged to build a cinema, supermarket and more specialty stores.

It is expected this stage of the expansion, which is not included in the $115 million estimate, will also be completed in 2014.

A beginning date for the expansion at Maryborough's Station Square Shopping Centre remains unpredictable as developers, the Green Group, negotiate with the Department of Transport and Main Roads.

The $25 million extension was approved by Fraser Coast Regional Council in August, but has been held up by a request from TMR for developers to fund upgrades to six different intersections.

Maryborough MP Anne Maddern has committed to working with Transport Minister Scott Emerson to help the project go ahead.

"Our community needs the opportunities and confidence boost that a project of this type can supply," she told the Chronicle in August.
