A FISHING trawler has smashed into rocks at Duranbah Beach and sunk this afternoon.

The incident began unfolding about 5pm (NSW).

A Marine Rescue spokesperson said it's believed the occupants of the trawler managed to climb to safety on the rocks before rescuers arrived.
