Renee milks good idea after problems breastfeeding

A FORMER Noosa resort cleaner who was struggling with her breast milk supply for her baby has started a booming business baking "lactation cookies".

Renee Cook put a post on Facebook seven months ago asking if anyone would be interested in purchasing the cookies, which contain natural ingredients to enhance lactation, she had been making for herself.

Immediately she got two orders.

Now Ms Cook hires a commercial kitchen at the J once a week to bake between 600 and 1000 cookies to ship all around the country.

The 26-year-old has also branched out into selling various teething products and other baby products, which are being sold around the world.

It's almost hard to imagine that eight months ago, Ms Cook had barely cooked in her life before.

"My first batch and I burnt the oven," she said.

"I've never been much of a cook.

"I started cooking from home, then gave the council a call and did a food handling supervising certificate and got a licence from the council to bake once a week from a commercial kitchen."

When she told her mum what she was baking, her mum thought it contained breast milk.

But Ms Cook said this wasn't the case, the ingredients were similar to what you would find in an Anzac cookie, with a few bits extra.

She's also designed a low-calorie and diabetic capsule, with the vital ingredients minus the sugar.

"I am a one-mum team. I bake an average of 600 to 1000 cookies every Monday, then on Tuesday I pack, air-seal them and they get shipped out.

Markets in Brisbane have been keen to sell her products and she has also had interest shown from a shop in Townsville.

"I was the first person in Australia to make homemade lactation cookies to buy."

She has only recently expanded from her Facebook page, Renee's cookies for mums and teething rings, to a website http://reneesgoodies.wix.com/reneesgoodies

How do they work?

They contain key ingredients that are known in boosting milk production.

Fenugreek, flaxseed and oats are all galactagogues, which means they stimulate the milk production hormone prolactin.

And the nursing tea is a loose leaf herbal tea with a range of benefits.
