Reds see off West Brom

LIVERPOOL midfielder Nuri Sahin saved his Aussie team-mate, goalkeeper Brad Jones, blushes in the third round League Cup clash with West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

Liverpool, the Cup holders, went behind in the third minute after Jones dropped the ball and Gabriel Tamas scored.

Sahin, on-loan from Real Madrid, equalised in the 17th minute with his first Liverpool goal before he struck again in the 82nd minute.

Wayne Rooney was back in action for Manchester United after missing a month through injury in the 2-1 over Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

Anderson and Tom Cleverley scored for United - it was Cleverley's first goal for the Red Devils - before Papiss Demba Cisse pulled one back for the visitors.

Elsewhere, Arsenal hammered League One strugglers Coventry 6-1 at The Emirates after goals from Theo Walcott (two), Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Ignasi Miquel and Andrey Arshavin.

Tottenham won 3-0 at Carlisle, Norwich beat Doncaster Rovers 1-0 and Reading came from behind to beat EPL rivals QPR 3-2.
