THE Federal Government will chip in $350,000 to kick-start this year's Red Shield Appeal.

It comes ahead of the Salvation Army's annual fundraising drive, which is in its 46th year.

This year's Red Shield Appeal will be held over the weekend of May 25-26, when thousands of Salvos and volunteers will be doorknocking across the nation.

Defence Minister Stephen Smith gave a speech at the Red Shield Appeal's official launch in Darwin on Thursday.
