Receptionist jobs on the line

THE JOB of a medical practice receptionist could become a thing of the past with more patients booking appointments online.

Healthcare appointment booking site, 1stAvailable.com.au, has recorded a dramatic increase in patients making appointments online rather than calling a receptionist.

Appointments made through 1stAvailable.com.au have increased by more than 450%, with hundreds of thousands of appointments available online.

Fifty-seven per cent of the appointments were made with dentists, followed by 17% for GP appointments, 13% for physiotherapists and 11% for chiropractors.

Maroochydore mother-of-two Stacey Roberts booked an acupuncture appointment online and found it easier than by phone.

"I was overdue with my first baby and heard acupuncture was helpful, so I Googled some in my area. From there I chose a time suitable for me," she said.

Budi Dental in Buderim introduced its online booking system when the practice opened in 2009.

Practice manager Kacey Muttock said while they received far more bookings on the phone, about 10 patients a week requested their appointments online.

  • 57% of the appointments on 1stAvailable.com.au were made with dentists, 17% for GPs, 13% for physiotherapists and 11% for chiropractors.
  • 53% of appointments were made outside of business hours
  • 44% of users were aged 30-45, 31% were aged 18-29, 17% were aged 46-59, 7% were over 60, 1% were under 18.
