Ranchero beans a new twist on Aussie brekkie classic
RICARDO Escalon is a man on a mission to spice up the Aussie breakfast tradition of beans on toast.
The telecommunications design leader from Melbourne is the latest home cook to win a round of Recipe to Riches, Channel 10's food marketing show.
His mild and smoky ranchero beans are on Woolworths shelves across the country for one week starting tomorrow.
The recipe was inspired by Escalon's childhood in the Central American country of El Salvador.
"We eat beans for breakfast, lunch and tea in El Salvador," he told APN.
"For us it's a sin to eat beans out of a can."
He said he was surprised to beat Heather Anschau's unique breakfast ice cream creation.
"If you asked me to choose between ice cream and beans then I'd choose ice cream because it is delicious," he said.
"I thought I was going to lose.
"I've never been proud of being Latin American, but through this experience I've come out of my shell. Now I'm proud of being Latin American."
If his product is the bestselling out of the show's finalists, then Escalan will win the $100,000 grand prize and a permanent spot on supermarket shelves.
The 39-year-old was inspired to audition for the show after attending last year's grand final with friend Rose Bonfa, who won the baking heat of season one with her almond biscuits.
"She makes it feel like it's possible even though she didn't win (the grand final)," he said.
"Hopefully I win, but even if I don't it's (food) something I'd love to pursue."
