Queen soaks up hospitality before storm of the century

QUEEN Elizabeth was lucky to make a clean getaway from Evans Head aerodrome just a few days before the 1954 flood disaster struck.

Just as it is 60 years this week since the biggest storm of the 20th Century for the Northern Rivers, it is also the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II's only visit to the region.

The young Queen visited Lismore and Casino in heavy rain on Wednesday, February 10, before flying out of Evans Head Aerodrome that afternoon.

The wet weather was the product of a tropical low stationed off the North Coast which continued to rain through that weekend, priming the region's catchments - the first "jab" before the knockout blow a week later.

If the Queen's party had hung around much longer, they may have well been grounded for the weekend.

Down-to-the-minute details of the monarch's coronation tour had covered The Northern Star's front pages in the weeks before and after her visit.
