Pvt. Hurtle Austin Patterson No 34 of 9th Battalion enlisted at Rockhampton only to be wounded.
Returning to Rockhampton he was invited to represent all soldiers, travelling on the Recruitment Train during 1915, giving stirring speeches and encouraging others to step forward and help the War effort.
His speeches including his account of landing at Gallipoli were published in the Newspapers of Longreach, Mt Morgan and Rockhampton.
