Budget job cut fears prompt strikes

PUBLIC servants will strike around the country today, protesting another expected round of job cuts in the Abbott government's ranks.

The strikes come as the government tips more job cuts around the country in the Budget.

While the government has not put a number on the expected redundancies, 17,000 staff have left the public service since Prime Minister Tony Abbott took office.

Community and Public Sector Union national secretary Nadine Flood said up to a third of the 17,000 jobs already lost came from regional and rural government offices.
