No response to highway pleas

CLARENCE Valley Mayor Richie Williamson is a patient man.

But this aspect of his nature is being severely tested by our State’s political leaders.

Eighteen days ago, Cr Williamson along with the mayors from Coffs Harbour (Keith Rhoades), Richmond Valley (Col Sullivan) and Ballina (Phil Silver), invited NSW Premier Kristina Keneally and the Leader of the NSW Opposition, Barry O’Farrell, to tour the horror stretch of highway between Coffs Harbour and Ballina.

However, the mayors are still waiting on some form of contact from the leaders, let alone confirmation of any potential visit, and Cr Williamson is fed up with the lack of a response.

Ms Keneally’s office told The Daily Examiner she intends to send Regional Development Minister Ian Macdonald in her place, a move that was slammed by Cr Williamson at the time.

Her office is yet to reply directly to the mayors’ invitation.

“State Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell has confirmed the visit with The Daily Examiner, but has not contacted any of the North Coast councillors who have united to encourage State politicians to see first hand the condition our 212-kilometre stretch of the highway is in,” he said.

“We need the State Government to commit to a start and finish date, a route of the highway and to funding.

“We need to see that these politicians have acknowledged our warranted requests and are taking action.”
