Police probe Sydney balcony fall death

AN ALCOHOL-fuelled argument may have been taking place on a hotel balcony before a young woman fell to her death in Sydney, police believe.

Emergency services were called to the Rydges hotel at Cronulla late Wednesday after reports a woman had fallen from her 10th-floor apartment.

The 21-year-old was found on a second floor balcony with critical injuries and died during emergency surgery on Thursday morning.

A crime scene was established and the woman's 27-year-old boyfriend has been questioned and released.

The pair was believed to have been holidaying from the state's south coast.

Police have not been able to confirm they were the only two people in the apartment at the time.

Detective Superintendent Greg Antonjuk told reporters a number of people would be interviewed in coming days.

He said some reports suggested there had been a disagreement between the woman and her partner and that alcohol was a factor.

"We're trying to gather a full set of circumstances of what occurred last night leading up to the tragic circumstances of this lady's death," Supt Antonjuk said

"We have some theories at this stage but they are yet to be tested against all the evidence that we are gathering."
