Mr Dempsey said 29-year-old Constable Casey Blain was tragically killed in a single vehicle crash while on duty about 10.45am.

"My heart goes out to Constable Blain's wife and child and I offer my condolences to his entire family during this difficult time," he said.

"My thoughts are also with the community and police officers from the region who have lost a colleague and friend."

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
