Police dig up backyard in 'cold case' search for teen

UPDATE:

POLICE have confirmed they are searching for "items of interest" at a North Mackay backyard that may help them solve the cold case of teenager Marilyn Wallman.

Mackay District's Detective Inspector Karyn Murphy confirmed they had recently received a tip-off through Crime Stoppers which led police to the site.

"Information from the public has led us to this latest site," she said.

"As a result of our investigations a site has been identified at North Mackay and police are presently out there conducting a forensic examination."

She said nothing had been found at the site but when asked whether they were looking for a body or perhaps a murder weapon, Dect Insp Murphy said "items of interest" might be located there.

Police have been at the site since yesterday and will continue their investigations tomorrow.

 

EARLIER:

POLICE are excavating a backyard of a North Mackay property as part of investigations into the 1972 disappearance of schoolgirl Marilyn Wallman.

A crime scene has been declared on the corner of Vine St and Bassett St in North Mackay.

On March 21 in 1972 Marilyn Wallman, aged 14, left her residence on her bicycle for school. Her bicycle was located nearby but there was no trace of Marilyn.

The Queensland Police Service along with Crime Stoppers has been in receipt of some information relevant to this investigation.
