THE FORMER national president of the Health Services Union, Michael Williamson, was arrested by New South Wales Police this morning.
While police did not name Mr Williamson in a statement released, he was seen entering the police station not long before the arrest announcement was made.
It is understood Mr Williamson was arrested in relation to Strike Force Carnarvon, a long-running investigation by state police into the HSU scandal.
The police statement said a 59-year-old man was arrested by the fraud and cyber crime squad at Maroubra Police Station at 7.45am.
It said detectives anticipated charging him with numerous offences, including hindering investigations, recruiting a person to engage in criminal activity and an "officer of an organisation publishing false statements".
