Pointing both barrels at luxury

The Mercedes-Benz Shooting Brake will make its way to Australia next year.
The Mercedes-Benz Shooting Brake will make its way to Australia next year.

AUSTRALIANS will have yet another luxury body style to choose from - it's just that they may never have heard of it.

Whether it's a wagon, coupe or sedan is a matter of conjecture - but Mercedes-Benz is referring to the wagon-like CLS as a Shooting Brake.

The name harks back to traditional British hunting vehicles, which needed to be a bit sporty, a lot more practical and with space for the hunting party.

Unlike the four-seat CLS on which it's based, the CLS Shooting Brake gets five seats and the option to fit a tow bar.

So it's more about practicality.

Pricing is yet to be confirmed for Australia. But a European premium of 1600 Euros suggests that once taxes are added the Shooting Brake should be about $5000 more than the CLS sedan it's based on.

In Australia the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake will be offered in three models - the CLS250 CDI Shooting Brake, C250 BlueEfficiency Shooting Brake and C63 AMG Shooting Brake. Each comes with Bluetooth, satellite-navigation, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, nine airbags, Pre-Safe crash preparation, driver drowsiness detection and automatic braking to avoid a crash.
