AN army of tradies from across Queensland is expected to head to cyclone-ravaged regions to begin the massive repair job left in Debbie's wake.

The Queensland Building and Construction Commission has set up a registry on its website of licensed tradespeople available to help with repairs in areas affected by the cyclone.

Insurance companies are already organising their own workforce to head to the affected areas as claims pour in, while other tradies are gearing up of their own accord.

A Suncorp spokesman said the insurer would employ construction giant Lendlease as a managing contractor to guide their response, with an emphasis on sourcing local workers.

But the sheer magnitude of the damage would mean there would be a mix of local and out-of-town workers used.

"In the first instance we always try to use local tradies because they are the people who know the types of buildings, they've worked on them before, but they can only do so much," the Suncorp spokesman said.

"Ironically, sometimes it can be a boost to the economy, because tradespeople get very busy."

Housing Minister Mick de Brenni encouraged residents to consider local contractors.

"Getting repairs done quickly is important to get communities back on their feet, and supporting local businesses where possible is also part of that," Mr de Brenni said.

Master Builders Queensland Deputy CEO Paul Bidwell said skilled tradespeople from Rockhampton to Cairns would form most of the workforce.

"Once they can head north then they are all going to head up there in droves," Mr Bidwell said.

"If they haven't got work they will go there."
