HOLDING onto the petrol pump while filling up could be a thing of the past, thanks to a Gladstone business.

Last month Fuel Mate launched a range of metal pins that make it easier to fill up at the bowser.

So far 10,000 pins have been produced, with Gladstone motorists snapping up the product.

Fuel Mate co-owner Heidi Hastings said the product offered relief to seniors and the disabled.

"We just want this everyday task to be easier for people," Ms Hastings said.

The Fuel Mate pin is inserted to the latch of the pump nozzle, saving the driver from holding the latch to release fuel.

Ms Hastings and her team have been working with manufacturers and designers since May to get the product online.

She's now working to get retailers to stock the pins.

"We've had people buying from all over Australia, from Perth to Wagga Wagga," she said.

While the pins were in line with national safety requirements, Ms Hastings encouraged people to use common sense.

"It's important that people still keep their hand on the pump and not walk away from their car while filling up."
