Pigging mates in broomstick brawl

A FRIENDSHIP that blossomed and then soured over a mutual love of pigging came to an end with one man beating the other with a broom handle.

William John Atkins yesterday pleaded guilty in the Warwick Magistrates Court to assault occasioning bodily harm while armed.

The former friends fell out over their pigging activities and the dispute turned violent on May 7.

The court heard the Pilton man approached the victim aggressively that day and proceeded to hit him with a broom handle.

The victim lifted his arm to protect himself from the impact and the broom smashed against his wrist.

He sought medical treatment for tenderness at the site of the injury.

After the assault, the victim got into his vehicle and witnesses reported seeing 30-year-old Atkins hit the other man a number of times through the car window.

Defence lawyer David Burns said the victim was provocative to his client on the day of the assault, by "giving him the finger" and dented his client's vehicle with boltcutters.

"The complainant was effectively armed with boltcutters, which he used to cause damage to my client's vehicle," he said.

Atkins was fined $900 but no conviction was recorded against him.
