Personal garbage a source for ID theft

TWO in every three Australian households place themselves at risk of identity theft by dumping personal items in their garbage bins, according to new research.

And the risk is no joke with one in five Australians reporting to be a victim of some sort of identity crime.

Australia's first ever bin-raiding research, undertaken for National Identity Fraud Awareness Week analysed the contents of domestic general rubbish in a major city suburb, with more than half containing documents that could be used in a 100-point ID check.

Peter Campbell, national marketing manager for Fellowes Australia, said he hoped it would make people think twice about how they dispose of their personal information.
