Penalty miss costs Reds chance of win at home

FOOTBALL: Liverpool moved to third in the English Premier League a point ahead of Manchester City but it should have been three after another poor home performance from the Reds.

James Milner had his second-half penalty saved by England teammate Fraser Forster as Jurgen Klopp's men drew 0-0 with Southampton at Anfield.

City has a game in hand on Liverpool and can go back into third if it wins that.

Cross-town rival Manchester United had the chance to close the gap on City and Liverpool but lost 2-0 at Arsenal to end its 25-match unbeaten run.

It was Arsene Wenger's first win over Jose Mourinho in 13 attempts and revived Arsenal's own Champions League qualification chances.

Quick-fire second-half goals by Granit Xhaka (with the help of a huge deflection) and United old boy Danny Welbeck at the Emirates Stadium condemned the visitors to their first defeat in 26 league games, since a 4-0 thrashing at Chelsea on October 23.

Arsenal is still in sixth, six points behind City, which is in the fourth and final Champions League berth.

The Gunners are now just two points below fifth-place United and has games in hand on both Manchester teams.

Wenger did defeat Mourinho's Chelsea in the 2015 Community Shield, but this was the first time he had got the better of his old foe with league points at stake.
