BROAD inter-region partnerships will be the key to growth in the tourism and broader business communities of the Tweed, according to the new chief executive officer of Destination Tweed.

Bill Tatchell, who took up his role with the tourism and economic development body in the last fortnight, said productive relationships with neighbouring regions would mean greater success and opportunity.

"We win, they win, so it's really co-operative," Mr Tatchell said.

"Tourists don't see boundaries so let's not force those boundaries on ourselves and be protective of our patch of dirt. There's too many opportunities to miss if we take that protectionist view."

Mr Tatchell said while one of Destination Tweed's roles was to market the region to attract new business, it was not responsible for setting them up here. Instead, it is designed to be a "matchmaker".

"There's a lot to be gained by sharing knowledge and a lot to be gained by pooling resources," he said.

"To that end we will be holding an annual economic summit, which will provide an opportunity to not only showcase the Tweed as a place to do business but the depth and breadth of product here.

"Working with the chambers (of commerce), let's facilitate that as opposed to us trying to do it in isolation."

Mr Tatchell said the Tweed region had to start planning now if it wanted to capitalise on the Commonwealth Games to be held on the Gold Coast in 2018.

"There's obviously a flow-on effect that's going to happen by capturing some of that market," he said.

"The opportunities I see from a sports tourism perspective is to work with (Tweed Shire) council and I know they are examining the infrastructure they have in place and how they can have a look at those facilities and what needs to be done to them to attract teams to come to the region to train prior to the games."

"It's not rocket science, it's logical and the steps need to be put in place now, not later."
