CONSTRUCTION of the long anticipated multi-storey Lismore Base Hospital carpark has begun with local MP Thomas George turning the first sod at the Uralba St site.

He said it was an important day for the community who have waited years for the fairytale carpark to be confirmed.

"There has been an ongoing problem with parking and this will alleviate that," Mr George said.

"It would have been impossible to have the opening of stage 3a of the hospital without the completion of this car park."

The $9.27 million carpark is due to open before the completion of stage 3a of the hospital upgrade in late March to early April next year.

"Stage one will provide carparking for 270 cars, then we will continue on to pursue stage 2 which will be a further 250 carparks," Mr George said.

Stage 3a of the hospital upgrade, costing $80.2 million, is the extension of the emergency unit and other departments such as the renal unit, while the final $180 million stage will see the construction of two new towers as well as more beds and services for women's care.

Woollam Constructions is leading the carpark project and regional manager Ben Cummins said the design will have a 3D effect blending in with the local landscape.

He said there was an emphasis on employing local indigenous people on the project with 10% Aboriginal involvement.

Health Infrastructure senior project director Troy Harvey said the completed carpark will appear as a dual level complex from Uralba St while the full five levels will be in sight from Dalziell St.

The equivalent of four Olympic sized pools of fresh basalt will be excavated.
