Kate embraces gay Idol mantle
Ms Cook, who is an openly gay relationship with partner Kerry, has won kudos for not shying away from her sexuality on the show.
Fans have been bombarding her Facebook fan club page with messages supporting her out-and-proud stance on the show – something Ms Cook said has come as a surprise.
“It’s fantastic to think that I’m touching people out there and they’re responding in a positive way,” Ms Cook said.
“Coming into the show, it’s something that I didn’t think about at all.
“I just rocked up to the auditions not expecting to make it so far.
“It’s not something I’ve tried to hide.
“I’m just grateful for all the support I’ve been receiving, it’s amazing and it really keeps me going.”
On last Sunday night’s show the Lowood resident blurred gender lines with a searing rendition of Jet’s Are You Gonna Be My Girl, after receiving tuition from rock icon Suzi Quatro.
Although she performed without her trademark akubra, fans of the Lowood singer should not expect to see her with a full make-over anytime soon.
During a recent photo shoot for New Weekly magazine, Ms Cook had her hair slicked back, wore red lipstick and high heels – but had to say no to having her toe nails painted.
“It was a crack up, I thought I would give the heels a go but I had to draw the line with the nail polish,” she said.
Ms Cook is hoping to survive the public vote from last week’s episode – with the results to be announced at 6.30pm this Sunday on Channel 10 – and make it through to the top 10.
She said she was hard at working picking a song for Sunday should she make it through, and said it would definitely be a country tune.
If she makes it through, viewers can vote for Kate as from 6.30pm this Sunday until 3am the next morning by texting “Kate” to 19 10 10.
