Our fight for workers now part of national campaign

A POWERFUL campaign to protect regional jobs from the threat of 100% fly-in, fly-out rosters is now being held up as an example of the great things achieved by regional newspapers.

Australian Regional Media - which publishes this website -- dismantled the case for these out-of-town workers through a long-running campaign.

The Queensland Government approved 100% fly-in, fly-out rosters for two coal mines in Central Queensland. 

After then-Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney announced 650 jobs would be pulled from Brisbane and 250 from Cairns - locking out our readers from work in their own towns - reporter Owen Jacques took up the fight.

Locals had to watch visiting miners arrive from 1000km away and take up work on a site just 5km from their homes.

ARM used the combined firepower of its 10 daily newspapers and associated websites across the state to push for change.

Within three months, the government's FIFO policy was all-but-abandoned.

There are 10,000 jobs in the pipeline for proposed coal mines in regional Queensland.

The FIFO battle won for these communities ensures they will never again face a government robbing them of work.

The campaign is now part of a marketing effort by national publishing body The Newspaper Works to illustrate the power of newspapers.

ARM will publish the advertisements later this week.

They will also be featured in national metropolitan newspapers including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Daily Telegraph and The Australian.

It is not the only time ARM has scored a major victory for its communities.

In April, APM's Northern Star raised $80,000 for 18-year-old Jackson Byrnes so he could undergo life-saving brain surgery.

Its mastheads have also led a major push to stop domestic violence and drive major law reforms to protect the vulnerable.

The Influential by Nature strategy is supported by ARM, News Corp Australia, Fairfax Media and Seven West.
