Olympic swimmer escapes jail time on drugs charge

CHAMPION swimmer Scott Miller has narrowly escaped a jail sentence after pleaded guilty to possessing the drug "ice".

The Olympic Bronze medallist was busted twice with methamphetamines last year.

Police also seized $16,000 in cash which was later linked to an escort agency.

The DPP called for jail time on the grounds Miller had failed to learn his lesson when he was given a good behaviour bond for drug possession in 2009.

Miller's lawyers argued he had successfully completed a stint in rehab and would no re-offend.

In handing down a suspended sentence, Magistrate Jan Stevenson said Miller had one last chance and that police would be watching him "like a hawk".

Outside court, Miller and his girlfriend dodged waiting media and ran down the street.

He will be on strict reporting conditions for the next 12 months.
