Nuts exposure to Sunrise viewers does macadamia industry good

GYMPIE'S national exposure on Channel 7's Sunrise program was great publicity for the region, according to tourism expert Andrew Saunders.

Yesterday the national Sunrise audience tuned in to see weather presenter Nuala Hafner stand by an open fire, drive a nut picker and interview macadamia farmers Belinda and Daniel Blanco on their Wolvi property.

At one stage Mr Blanco took control of the interview to explain the life cycle of the macadamia nut.

Miss Hafner had to take back control of the interview to fit it into the allotted time.

She told Mr Blanco he should have a television hosting job.

About 380,000 people tuned in to the program, providing an excellent opportunity to showcase the native Australian nut, the many facets of the Gympie macadamia industry and to celebrate a wonderful harvest year for macadamias.

The other benefit was to the Gympie region as a whole.

Mr Saunders, tourism and development manager of Destination Gympie, said the exposure was great news for the region.

"Sunrise is one of the most watched morning news programs nationally, the exposure is hard to measure," he said.

"However, you could say it is significant.

"To showcase innovative primary producers like

Belinda and Daniel with their macadamia farm in Wolvi is a great boost to the Gympie Gold Regional Produce network and the region in general."

The Gympie region produces 10% of the national macadamia harvest.
