Number of homes destroyed by wildfire will rise

AT LEAST 28 homes have been destroyed and more losses are expected later today as an out-of-control wildfire continues to devastate rural properties near the NSW town of Coonabarabran.

Dozens of families were evacuated from their properties when an emergency warning was issued for the region following reports of a fire in the Warrumbungle National Park late Sunday.

The NSW Rural Fire Service confirmed at 1pm today that 28 homes had been lost and "the number is expected to rise".

Firefighters are working to establish containment lines closer to town but several rural properties are in the direct line of fire.

Authorities are warning the hundreds currently taking shelter at the Tattersalls Hotel in Coonabarabran that it is not safe to return home.

A relocation centre is being set up at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club.Major surrounding roads including the Newell Hwy are cut.
