NSW Governor to celebrate Australia Day at official lunch

NEW South Wales Governor Marie Bashir welcomed celebrities and honoured guests from across the country to the official Australia Day luncheon in Sydney on Friday.

Cultural icons from Margaret Fulton to The Wiggles headed along to watch the NSW Public Schools Aboriginal Dance Company perform at the Luna Park shindig.

Other figures, including host actor Shane Jacobsen, journalist Annabel Crabb and 2014 Senior Australian of the Year Peter Ford enjoyed the state's hospitality.

The luncheon was the first official state function before the Australia Day Awards and Australian of the Year Awards ceremonies in Canberra this long weekend.

An official announcement of the Australian of the Year will go ahead on Sunday, January 25, at 6pm on the lawns of Parliament House in the capital.

The finalists from Queensland and New South Wales have already been announced, and include the Chinese-born dancer Li Cunxin as the Sunshine State's Australian of the Year 2014.

In NSW, Australian Football League player and indigenous leader Adam Goodes was named as that state's Australian of the Year 2014.

The full proceedings of the national ceremony will be broadcast on ABC across the country from 6pm Sunday.
