Netball: Ngatai has perfect record

JOHNNIE-Deshay Ngatai has never played a year of netball without winning a grand final, with her latest conquest a cadet Division 1 championship with Valleys Rubies.

The record has stood for 10 years since she began playing in Western Australia, not far from Fremantle.

Ngatai knows the day will probably come when she will have to taste of defeat.

But she is glad to have kept the feeling away for at least another year.

"I am very competitive so I try to win every year," she said.

"I am so nervous every game, but especially for the grand final.

"It is relief to have won it."

Although she is high strung when it comes time to take the court and put her unbeaten record to the test, it is the more relaxed nature of playing in Gladstone which Ngatai likes most about being on the court here.

The competition where she came from is much more intense and serious.

In a way, it has helped calm the nerves the 17-year-old feels when she goes to play.

But it has not dimmed her determination and competitive streak.

So far, she is two premierships from two years in Gladstone playing for

Valleys.

The record makes her glad she joined the club. And the fact she has made a lot of great friends.

"I liked it straight away. My friend asked me to play and the club has been great," she said.

"I find it more enjoyable, it is more team based than people looking for individual honours."

Ngatai will look to work her way into the senior competition next year, and is hoping to find a team which has the ability to win her an 11th straight crown.

"I don't want to know what it feels like to lose one," she laughed.
