New recruits impress as Titans triumph

GOLD Coast Titans coach John Cartwright would have been pleased after a number of his new recruits shone in a trial win over the Warriors at North Harbour Stadium yesterday afternoon.

Paul Carter, Brad Tighe, Maurice Blair, Christian Hazard and Kalifa Faifai Loa all impressed on their debuts as the Titans scored 32 unanswered points to win 36-18.

The Titans fought back from 18-4 down early to run away with the match against a young Warriors outfit. Carter looked sharp out of dummy-half and outside backs Tighe, Blair and Siuatonga Likiliki all displayed some fine touches out wide.

Winger Faifai Loa also got in on the action, scoring a try and kicking four out of six conversions.

Ex-South Sydney player Hazard started the game after regular five-eighth Aidan Sezer withdrew from the game as a precautionary measure because of hamstring tightness.

The 19-year-old was rewarded for a good showing with a try late in the match to seal the victory.

The Titans also lost winger Steve Michaels in the build-up to the match again with hamstring tightness.

In other trial results from Saturday night, the Knights beat the First Nations Goannas 52-12, Canberra upset Melbourne 20-12 and the Dragons trounced a combined Illawarra and Mudgee team 60-16.

Meanwhile, a serious ankle injury to Tigers utility Dene Halatau soured an impressive 32-8 victory over Penrith.
