OPPOSITION Leader Tony Abbott has told Coalition colleagues that outgoing Member for Hinkler Paul Neville was "a great friend" to all in the Liberal and National parties.

Mr Neville recently announced he would retire from politics at the next election after 20 years representing the people of Hinkler in the House of Representatives.

Mr Abbott told the closed Coalition party room meeting on Tuesday morning Mr Neville was a "very good local member and a great friend to all in the party".

Mr Neville's retirement comes after two other senior Coalition figures also recently announced their retirement plans, Queensland Senators Ron Boswell and Sue Boyce, creating several openings for fresh faces among the Coalition team.
