NBN towers for Beerwah, Eudlo, Glass House Mountains

HIGH-speed wireless internet towers are set to be erected in Beerwah, Eudlo and Glass House Mountains.

Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the National Broadband Network Co have reached an agreement for the structures to be erected despite the council's original opposition to them.

Both parties appeared briefly in the Planning and Environment Court of Queensland on Wednesday.

Final judgments, listing their agreed terms, have not yet been released.

The Sunshine Coast Council rejected NBN Co's request to build the towers more than 12 months ago when the company applied for a planning permit at 419 Mooloolah Rd, Eudlo; 2001 Old Gympie Rd, Glass House Mountains; and at Lot 890, Tower Lane, Beerwah.

The council said no to the proposed towers on a number of grounds including that they did not fit in with the "identity and sense of place” of the Eudlo community; they would have an impact on the Glass House Mountains scenery; and the Beerwah structure conflicted with the region's planning scheme.

The council listed a number of other issues including that NBN Co's proposals did not "demonstrate sufficient grounds” that the towers were in the public interest.

In its appeal, NBN Co said there were no alternative places to erect the towers in each community.

The company also said there were "sufficient grounds” that the towers should go ahead because they were in the public interest; they would not look out of place; they would facilitate investment in each community; and they would not impact on residents' health.
