Mum unable to save life of twin daughter trapped in blaze

WITH one of her daughters in her arms, a Sydney mother was forced to flee her burning home knowing the girl's twin was trapped and helpless in the upstairs bedroom.

The mother rushed to the top floor of her Claymore home when she smelt smoke coming from a room on Tuesday afternoon.

She was able to rescue one of her four-year-old daughters but a wall of flames stopped her from reaching the other.

A highway patrol officer burst into the home but he too was forced back of the flames.

Outside the mother and daughter watched helplessly as firefighters battled the blaze.

As the pair was taken to hospital, the missing girl's body was found.

The cause of the fire was not known on Tuesday night.

The mother and daughter were in a stable condition and the officer was being treated for smoke inhilation.

A crime scene was established and forensic investigators will be sent to the home on Wednesday.
