Modern forensic testing sees man arrested over 1998 attack

A BREAKTHROUGH in a historic investigation into a sexual predator at Newcastle in the late 90s has resulted in the arrest of a 41-year-old man.

It's been 15 years since a 19-year-old woman was allegedly dragged from her car, attacked and forced to lie down on rail way tracks near Islington in December, 1998.

Bruised and battered, the woman managed to flee and flag down a passing driver.

Ever since, detectives have conducted an exhaustive investigation into the attack but up until this week, they had few leads.

Modern forensic testing allegedly linked evidence from the scene to a Waratah man.

He was arrested on Wednesday and charged with aggravated sexual assault.
